Course content
Why do thousands of Chinese move within China or abroad, and what challenges do they face along the way? This course explores modern Chinese economic migration since the 1970s, combining history, economics, and anthropology. Students will examine rural-to-urban migration, international labor and student flows, and the global networks created by the Chinese diaspora. We will look at how migration shapes lives, families, and societies, both in China and in the countries receiving migrants. Through case studies, simulations, and discussions, students will explore real experiences of migrants, cultural adaptation, and community building, while also analyzing policies and global trends that influence migration. By the end of the course, students will gain a dynamic, interdisciplinary understanding of Chinese economic migration and its role in today's interconnected world.
