Introduction to China's Ethnic Minorities The lecture course China's Ethnic Minorities gives an introduction into the complex dynamics of ethnicity in the People's Republic of China. Starting out with an outline of the historical construction and specificities of Chinese notions of ethnicity and the delineation and definition of the country's 56 ethnic groups, it proceeds to focus in turn on some of the most important minority groups. After the introduction, each lecture focuses on a particular minority group in China. The lectures are given by invited specialists working on the groups in question whose personal research interest and practice determines the more precise topics of the lecture. All lectures reflect on local, Chinese and international notions of ethnicity, minority and identity and discus ethnic-, language- and educational policies as well as the given communities' economic positions in the rapidly modernizing Chinese economy.
