Course content
1. General introduction (Chinese spoken cinema in the context of other Asian cinemas) 2. Early film and silent cinema 3. First and second golden age 4. Cinema during communism regime and Cultural Revolution 5. The Fifth and the Sixth Generation 6. Contemporary Chinese cinema 7. Cinema of Taiwan (Taiwanese new wave) 8. Cinema of Hong Kong (Action cinema and main directors of auteur cinema)

Learning outcomes
This course is conceived as an introduction to the history of Chinese cinema (i.e. China, Hong Kong and Taiwan). We will approach each of these cinemas from the historical standpoint. Each lecture will focus on particular period, and its main directors. The history of Chinese film is covered from the early beginnings to the present day. In all the lectures we will show samples from particular movies and it is recommended for each student to watch few selected films.
