Course content
1. Three modes of environmental adaptation and their social correlates The history of intensification from pre-Imperial times to the present The communist program of modernization and its basis in a particular view of science 2. Development and environmental degradation in rural Han China Colonial development in the uplands of the Southeast Asian Massif Colonial development in the pastoral cultures of Central Asia 3. Development seen from the perspective of agriculture, food, and soil Development seen from the perspective of increased energy use Development seen from the perspective of increased water use 4. Deforestation and reforestation The matter of air pollution Environmentalism and the possibilities of democratic transition

Learning outcomes
One-semestrial course Economic Geography of China's (DLJ) main object is to introduce the students into general transition factors and economic processes in China and to enable the student to work with these information, critically analyze them and to interpret them. The main skills the students are required to learn in the course are as following: 1) Deeper understanding of economic situation and of processes in contemporary China 2) Introduction into Chinese stransition in years 1978-2010 and their geographical, economical and social impacts and contexts. 3) The course course is also focused on particular information useful in the practise such as those about Chinese companies, about Chinese economic environment, opportunities, limits, threats and weaknesses of contemporary China and of its further development. All these information can be used by the student in the future while looking for a job (eg. in tourism, interpreting, lecturing, analyses of the Chinese market etc.) 4) The knowledge from this course is the general framework necessary for further education in Asian Studies.
By passing the course the students should have general knowledge about: 1) history of land use and its geographical determinations in China 2) major economic and environmental issues in China 3) human-nature relation in China 4) evolution and importance of China's economy in regard to its environment 5) contemporary trends in Chinese economy and economic legislation and their impact on environment 6) deforestation, reforestation, soil degradation and colonization, air pollution, energy resources etc.
Prerequisites
The course is primarily for students of sinology who have already passed exam in Geography of China. However, the course is suitable also for students of related disciplines who are interested in the topic.

Assessment methods and criteria
Essay, Systematic Observation of Student

Preparation for each lesson and reading of the compulsory literature, active participation in the lessons and final written study. The essay it not compulsory in the case the student fullfills all other assignments (100 % presence and active participation in the course)
