Course content
|
Course focuses on complex Chinese language instruction. First semester covers lesson 1-10 of Integrated Chinese (4th edition), both textbook and workbook. Audio recordings are available for download at https://www.cheng-tsui.com/node/5665.

Learning outcomes
|
The course is designed as intensive language course with daily classes. It focuses on practical language of communication, including all five language skills: reading, listening, speaking, writing, and cultural awareness. During the first semester, students acquire basic skills in daily conversartion, Chinese grammar, Chinese script as well as phonetic system. The course is taught by both Czech lecturers and Chinese native speakers. Writing: Students learn to read and write first 368 characters, acquire solid knowledge of Chinese character structure, including character structure, etymology and stroke order. Conversational topics: 1. Greetings 2. Family 3. Time and Date 4. Hobbies 5. Visiting Friends 6. Making Appointments 7. Styuding Chinese 8. School Life 9. Shopping 10. Transportation Phonetics: Chinese phonetic classes are integrated into the first semester language course, including two 45 minute sessions per week. Phonetic classes focus on both teoretical knowledge of Chinese phonetic system as well as practical drills on inicials, finals, syllables, tones and two syllable words. Succesful completion of Chinese 1 is necessary to sign up for following Chinese 2.
The aim of the course is to acquire phonetic system of Chinese as well as basic conversational skills which will be further developed in following courses.

The course is designed for first year students of Chinese language. No previous knowledge of Chinese is required.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam, Written exam, Student performance
Please beware that the course requires daily practice and preparation. Weekly tests as well as frequent grammatical and character exercises are designed to help students master the language gradually. Final exam includes both written and spoken part: 1. test on phonetics - focuses on the ability to distinguish and write down sequences of dictated two syllable words. Test includes 100 two syllable words, students are asked to write correctly the inicials, finals tones and full words in pinying. 2. test on language skills - focuses on grammar, vocabulary and Chinese characters. Minimal score requirement depends on individual student´s work during the semester (weekly quizzes, attendance). 3. spoken exam - dialogue on topics covered during the semester, test the ability to make a sentence, understand questions, reply Student must pass all three parts to obtain credits.
