Key learning outcomes The doctoral study program Social medicine is a medical program studying non-biologic aspects of health and diseases on the level of population groups and the whole population. It puts health and diseases into the complex context including historical context. The program studies social determinants of health, population health, actual demographic trends, and the change in the concept of health and disease in the nowadays society. Social Medicine deals with cultural, gender, and age specific needs of population groups. Part of Social Medicine is the analysis of optimal organisational and economic instruments aiming at maintaining and improving of the health of the population, and studies of the possibilities of their connection in the healthcare system. It deals with the issues of support, protection and strengthening the health of the population, including the impact of general and specific working conditions and support of functional health capabilities according to international classifications. Social Medicine is an important theoretical base for medical practice, because it gives scientifically proven data on how to correctly methodologically analyse and effectively manage and distribute health services in accordance with the principles of medical ethics.
