Unit - language focus - 'have' as an auxiliary and main verb; personality; using a dictionary - discourse markers: linkers; work; the rhythm of spoken English - pronouns; learning languages; sound-spelling relationships; understanding accents - the past: habitual events and specific incidents; word building: abstract nouns; word stress with suffixes; writing - get; phrases with get; words and phrases of French origin - discourse markers: adverbs and adverbial expressions; conflict and warfare; stress in word families - speculation and deduction; sounds and the human voice; consonant clusters - adding emphasis: inversion; describing books and films; sounds and spelling - distancing; expressions with 'time'; linking in short phrases - unreal uses of past tenses; money; US and UK accents- ellipsis; animal matters; auxiliary verbs and to - verb + object + infinitive or gerund; compound adjectives; main and secondary stress

Learning outcomes

The main aim of the course VCJ/ESA2 is to help students improve their knowledge of English and English skills and to get to level B2-C1 according to the Common European Framework of reference (CEFR). Therefore, the course is especially intended to those students who plan to study or work abroad. VCJ/ESA2 promotes active verbal communication at level B2-C1 and it can be used as part of preparation for the Oxford Test of English.
Development and/or reinforcement of language skills on the B2-C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference.

Prerequisites
|
A minimum language level in English of level B1+ or B2 of the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR) is required. Students are expected to have a good knowledge of basic English grammar, for example they should be able to form questions and use all tenses and comparative and superlative adjectives or adverbs, etc. To check which level of the CEFR you are currently at, we recommend that you use online tests, for example at: http://examenglish.com/leveltest/index.html

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam, Written exam
A student is not allowed to be absent more than twice during the semestr and must use the materials which are available for this course online. The final grade is based on the result of the credit test (the required minimum is 70%) and the result of the oral examination.
