Course content
Lesson topic: Language focus 1 Visiting Places - expressing future plans and arrangements - homophones - describing places and verb phrases - writing an argumentative essay (taking sides) 2 The Natural World - how to use ellipsis - writing discursive essay (balanced arguments) - animal matters 3 Food and Ways of Preparing Food - compound nouns and possessive forms - describing texture, words with silent syllables - writing formal emails 4 The World of Sport - defining vs. non-defining relative clauses - homographs - world building: adjectives, nouns and verbs 5 Living and Working Abroad - cleft sentences - words that are often confused - listening for detail in interviews

Learning outcomes
The objective of VCJ/AV1 is to systematically develop the language skills of Academic English. It focuses on teaching students to orientate in different types of texts, to improve their listening and writing skills, and to extend their knowledge of specialised vocabulary at level B2-C1 of the Common European Framework for Languages.
Acquisition of academic skills on the B2-C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference.
Prerequisites
Students must have a minimum language level in English of level B1 of the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR). The prerequisite is completion of VCJ/AV1. To check which level of the CEFR you are currently at, we recommend that you use online tests, for example at http://examenglish.com/leveltest/index.html.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

Students are required to attend the classes although they may be absent twice per semester and they must participate in an active way. They must prepare for the classes as required by their teachers. They must successfully pass the final graded exam. The final grade is based on the result of the written tests in AV1 and in AV2 and on active participation during the semester.
