Course content
The course is an introduction to economics for students of development studies. The course provides foundations of economic theory in the areas of microeconomics, macroeconomics and international economics. The aim of the course is to introduce students to basic economic concepts and relations as a part of general knowledge and provide them with basic analytical framework for a follow-up course in development economics in the second year of the program. The emphasis is on the integration of theory with practical examples and economic policy. The course does not require previous knowledge of economics and advanced mathematics. The course covers following topics: (1) basic economic concepts, (2) market, demand and supply, (3) firms and competition, (4) externalities and public goods, (5) labor market and unemployment, (6) economic activity, (7) taxes and fiscal policy, (8) money and monetary policy, (9) financial system and crises, (10) international trade and finance.
