Course content

The course introduces students to the origins, development, and key approaches of environmental history as an interdisciplinary field that examines the long-term interactions between human societies and their environments. The introductory part focuses on the theoretical tools of environmental history and its connections to political ecology, as well as on the role of environmental factors in the rise and collapse of civilizations. The core of the course is structured around five geographic regions ? Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa, the MENA region, Latin America, and Central and East Asia. Students will analyse key processes such as landscape transformations, colonial extractivism, relationships to natural resources, and socio-environmental conflicts. The course links environmental history to contemporary challenges of the Anthropocene and guides students toward understanding diverse narratives and critically engaging with sources.
