Course content
Scope, emergence and development of molecular biotechnology. Microbial diversity and microorganisms with uses in biotechnology. Recombinant DNA technology, principles of gene expression in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Large-scale production of proteins from recombinant microorganisms. Production of protein and nucleic acids therapeutics, recombinant vaccines. Synthesis of enzymes, small biological molecules, antibiotics and biopolymers by recombinant microorganisms. Microbial insecticides (Bacillus thuringiensis toxin, baculoviruses). Bioremediation and biomass utilization.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Lecture
Learning outcomes
To introduce latest industrial, biomedical, pharmaceutical and agricultural applications of microbial and cell cultures.
Student should be able to describe basic principles of molecular biotechnology, to describe fundamentals of production of commercial products and therapeutics using genetically engineered microorganisms and cell cultures, and to describe the use of genetically engineered microorganisms for remediation and biomass utilization.
Prerequisites
To know fundamentals of biochemistry, microbiology and molecular biology.
