Introduction to sedimentology, its methods and models.

The students should be able to: - recall the basic terminology used in sedimentology - classify the carbonate and siliciclastic sediments - explain the significance of the features of sedimentary grains cement types for provenance analysis and characterization of diagenetic environment - describe the formation, mechanics of transport and deposition of sediment grains, sedimentary textures and mechanics of their formation - describe facies models of clastic and carbonate sediments - explain spatial and temporal relations between depositional systems, their cyclicity - describe main factors influencing the stratigraphy of depositional sequences: (eustasy, tectonics, sediment supply) - classify sedimentary basins, define their tectonic regime and depositional system - explain how can instrumental methods be utilized in the study of sedimentary rocks
