Course content

Basic terms - drug, the active substance, medicine, Pharmacopoeia drugs, nomenclature and classification of drugs, effective and ballast compounds. Overview of selected plant and animal drugs - saccharides, glycosides, essential oils, alkaloids, lipids, nucleic acids, peptides, proteins, enzymes. Processing and isolation of drugs from natural material - sampling, homogenization, disintegration, extraction, filtration, chromatographic and electromigration methods Work with the Czech Pharmacopoeia Macroscopy of drugs - training

Introduction to the topic of natural drugs - fundamentals of pharmacognosy.
After attending the course students should be able to know the basic terms and classification of drugs used in pharmacognosy. They should be able to describe active substances, effects and possibilities of application of selected drugs. Finally students should gain overview about the common methods of drug processing and isolation of active substances. The analysis of selected tea blends and macroscopic evaluation of drugs are also part of the course.

Prerequisites

Intermediate knowledge of organic chemistry and botany including the Latin terminology.
