Course content
1.The evolution of the orthographic norms, orthographic handbooks. 2.The lexical orthography, i/y after ambiguous consonants. Writing the letters ú,ů,u and the groups bje, vje, bě, vě, mě, mně. 3.Writing the prepositions s (se), z (ze). Prefixes s-, se-, z-, ze-, vz-, vze-. Alternating of the vowel quantity in word-formation. Alternating vowel quantity in different types of adjectives (adjectives denoting purpose or activity). Writing n/nn. 4.Signs and abbreviations. The orthography of groups of consonants, the orthography of compounds. 5.The orthography and orthoepy of the borrowed words with s/z. The orthography of borrowed words. 6.Capital letters. 7.Comma in a simple sentence. Comma in a complex sentence and in infinitive clauses. 8.Declension of masculine nouns, declension of toponyms and anthroponyms. 9.Declension of feminine nouns, declension of toponyms and anthroponyms. 10.Declension of neuter nouns, including toponyms. 11.Adjectives, possessive adjectives, the predicative and attributive adjective forms. 12.Pronouns. Numerals. Verbs. 13.Credit test.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to strengthen and extend the knowledge of orthography which the students should have acquired during their studies at primary and secondary schools. In particular it will focus on lexical, morphological and syntactic orthography and the students will learn the orthographical norms and the exceptions. A special attention will be paid to writing capital letters, borrowed words or punctuation. Students will learn the morphological system of Czech language, i.e. the system of parts of speech, their flection and categories, the orthographical norms and the alternations. The phenomena will be practiced using textbooks and newly published short articles about language.
The students will understand the lexical, morphological and syntactic orthography and will be able to apply them in their own written texts.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of Czech, at least C1 level of the European Framework of Reference for Languages, or the level of language required at the school-leaving examination

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

-Attendance, max. 2 absences -Accomplishment of tasks (finding solutions of problematic issues, preparing short presentations on a given topic etc.) -Active participation in discussion -Passing the final test
