Course content
Theoretical aspects of analytical chemistry cover the most important types of chemical reactions and equilibria involved in separation, detection and determination of compounds in solutions. Establishment of equilibrium conditions is explained on the basis of characterization of solution composition, knowledge of reaction mechanisms, and relationships between properties of compounds and reaction medium. The main themes: Thermodynamics and kinetics of chemical reactions, acid-base equilibria in aqueous and nonaqueous media, influence of relative permitivity and components of a medium on the strength of acids and bases, acidity scales in amphiprotic, aprotic and innert solvents, characterization and analytical application of colored protolytes (indicators), theory of complexation, precipitation and oxidation-reduction reactions, influence of media on equilibria in solution, methods for determination of equilibrium constants, distribution and quantification of components in equilibrium systems and their graphic representation.
