Course content
1. Roman jurists and the Roman state: the power trade-off between state power and jurisprudence from Augustus to Hadrian 1.1. Archaic law: the relationship between law and religion. The basic features of Roman legal thought 1.2. The Roman jurist: from private arbiter to servant of the state 1.3. Scaevola, Labeo, Ulpian 2. The influence of Greek philosophy on Roman law and the further development of the doctrines of state law 2.1. Polybios and the changes in the constitutions 2.2. The mixed constitution 2.3. Natural law 2.4. Aristotle: conception of justice and virtue ethics 3. Private law reception 3.1. The fate of Roman law after the end of the Western Roman Empire 3.2. The relationship between Christianity and law 3.3. The common law of universities 3.4. Medieval schools of Roman law 3.5. Natural Law School 3.6. Usus modernus pandectarum, German science, positivism, codification.

Learning outcomes
The course represents the basic subject of the second pillar of the study programme aimed primarily at developing and deepening the student's knowledge in the the of Legal History and Roman Law programme. The essence of the course will be the analysis of the theoretical and practical issues of Roman law. Each seminar will have its own topic within which students will prepare their own presentation or analysis of a specific legal problem. Topics will be presented in the seminar and then discussed with other students and the teachers involved. The course is designed as a two-semester course, with emphasis on selected issues in Roman law each semester. The first semester focuses primarily on a deeper understanding of the general part of Roman law beyond the Master's degree. The second semester will then focus on specific issues of Roman law, particularly with regard to the topics of the students' dissertations.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance

Active participation in seminars, including presentations on the assigned topic. A full-time student must attend 80% of the seminars. A student of the combined form must attend at least 30% of the seminars and individual consultations of two hours. A professional interview over a written document prepared by the student.
