Course content
1. Introduction to Academic writing 2. Paragraph - topic sentences, cohesion, coherence 3. Introduction 4. Body 5. Conclusion 6. Conventions - formal register, reader-friendly style, typical phrases 7. Vocabulary - typical pitfalls, typical academic words 8. Vocabulary - collocations, synonyms, prepositions, articles, punctuation 9. Plagiarism 10. Summarizing and paraphrasing 11. References and quotations, citing sources, bibliography 12. Revision

Learning outcomes
The Academic Writing course introduces the principles of writing academic articles in English. In particular, students will learn the linguistic resources typical for writing academic texts in English, the patterns used for structuring academic texts in an English-language environment, the means of coherence and cohesion of the text, the methods of referencing and the application of various citation standards, as well as ways to avoid plagiarism. By learning how to write and structure a scientific text correctly and how to communicate their knowledge, ideas, arguments and conclusions clearly, students also learn, among other things, to better understand other authors' texts. In the class, students complete partial written assignments.
Acquisition of language resources for writing professional English texts.
Prerequisites
Completion of this course is not contigent upon the successful completion of another cource.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

The student's active participation in seminars and writing assignments is required. Full-time students must participate in 80% of seminars, combined students must participate in 50% of seminars and one individual consultation.
