Learning outcomes
The course focuses on developing students? basic communication skills in professional legal English through discussions of current legal issues and the resolution of practical hypothetical scenarios drawn from various areas of law. Its aim is to develop students? ability to formulate and defend their own opinions, construct arguments, respond to opposing viewpoints, engage in professional discussions, and propose straightforward solutions. Teaching is based on current social and legal developments and employs discussions, case studies, simulated proceedings, negotiations, and role-play activities. Emphasis is placed on the active use of specialised legal terminology and on the ability to apply language skills in situations reflecting legal practice. The primary aim is to develop practical language skills through simple hypothetical scenarios. Legal topics serve solely as a means of developing professional communication, argumentation, and the ability to deal with specific situations, rather than as a substitute for teaching individual branches of law.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: ? use specialised French legal terminology when discussing current legal issues; ? formulate, explain, and defend their own views in French for legal purposes; ? critically assess legal issues and suggest possible solutions; ? construct arguments, respond to objections, and respect differing opinions; ? Demonstrate critical thinking, independent judgement, effective and professional communication, and respect for professional and ethical principles.
Prerequisites
Students are expected to have at least an elementary to lower-intermediate level of French (minimum A2), enabling them to participate in discussions and understand texts dealing with specialised topics. A basic familiarity with legal terminology and concepts is an advantage. Prior completion of specific law courses is not required. The course is open to students from different years of study and requires active participation in seminars, discussions, and practical exercises.
