Course content
1. Introduction. English legal contexts and terminology. Dictionaries and their use. 2. The language of law. Legal verbs, examples of crimes, legal adjectives. 3. Human rights. Balancing rights with responsibilities. What are the universal human rights? 4. The Language of Human Rights. Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The European Court of Human Rights. 5. International law. What is international law? The language of international law. 6. Public international law. 7. Introduction to criminal law. General considerations. Criminal vs. civil law terminology. Expressing obligation and prohibition. 8. The language of criminal law and criminal proceedings. Criminal case vs. Civil action. The case of O. J. Simpson 9. Criminal law. Parties to crimes. Crimes against the person. 10. Criminal law. Crimes against the property. 11. Introduction to family law. Marriage, separation and divorce. 12. Family law. Children and alimony. 13. The legal profession. Final revision.

Learning outcomes
The course is aimed at providing students with necessary background in legal English for their professional development, as well as improving general language skills.
Legal vocabulary, grammar, communicative skills, reading, writing, listening, giving opinions.
