Aims: After completing the course students will be able to: " Students will demonstrate a gross understanding of the major disorders under the categories outlined . " Students will be able to name and describe various methods of scientific inquiry utilized in assessing and diagnosing psychiatric disorders. " Students will be able to compare and contrast differing theoretical perspectives of selected categories. " Students will be able to communicate and present selected psychological concepts, principles, and theories. Purpose: The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to mental disorders. We will discuss diagnostic issues and methods used to study psychopathology. We will also examine a variety of mental disorders from several different theoretical and treatment perspectives. Focus will be on diagnosis, epidemiology, course of the disorder, etiology, and treatment issues A major goal of the course is to promote greater awareness and knowledge of psychopathology. Topics: Introduction Models of abnormality Anxiety disorders Mood disorders Eating disorders Schizophrenia Disorders of Childhood and Adolescence
