The aim of the course is to present current views on education and leisure from the perspective of contemporary sociology. Education is presented to students in a broader sociological context as a process of socialization (integrating individuals into society, reproducing social order, legitimizing social inequalities, ensuring social selection and allocation) from the perspective of important sociological paradigms and theories. Emphasis is placed primarily on the interpretation of critical and engaged sociological and pedagogical theories of education and training (de-schooling of society, social reproduction theory, deprivation theory, anti-pedagogical theories, gender theories). Furthermore, attention will be paid to significant actors within the individual's social environment who influence the course and results of their education and leisure time. The issue of leisure time is then presented primarily in connection with P. Bourdieu's theory of reproduction as part of lifestyle/manner, a manifestation of the social practice of the individual and their environment in the so-called social space, in relation to the categories of habitus, economic and cultural capital. The seminars will also include a presentation of selected analytical methods focused on the social aspects of education and training.
After completing the course, students will be able to: - Explain education from the perspective of basic paradigms and significant theories of contemporary sociology - Assess the arguments of selected critical sociological theories in relation to the consequences of education and training for the reproduction and legitimization of social inequalities - Describe and explain the influence of family, peer groups, and subcultures on the course and results of education - Explain and defend the way of spending free time as an expression of lifestyle and an indicator of belonging to a particular social class (based on the characteristic distribution of economic and cultural capital) - Implement selected analytical procedures for measuring or identifying selected social (structural) aspects influencing education (socioeconomic status, capital, gender aspects, curriculum analysis).
