Late Victorian and Edwardian novel, colonial literature. British and Irish modernism in poetry and fiction. Britain between the wars and the reflection of war in literature. Post-war novelists, Angry Young Men and Campus Novel. Postmodernism and postcolonialism. Feminism and contemporary women writers. 20th century drama - Irish drama, post-war drama, the Theatre of the Absurd. The development of 20th century poetry.

The course provides a concise survey of the development of British literature in the 20th century, focusing on an analysis of works representing the literary movements of this period and works of particular authors (Modernism: prose and poetry, authors writing between the wars, Post-War literature, contemporary authors and 20th century drama).

Students are required: to read on schedule (shorter texts: short stories or poems and also several novels), participate actively in class discussions, read recommended books in English and be prepared to discuss them with the teacher, write an essay.
