This course focuses on the American writers of the 20th century. Seminars examine the development of American literature during this period in its social, political and cultural contexts. Students explore significant novels, plays and poems, and they learn how to analyze these works. Special emphasis is put on multi-genre and ethnic literature in order to highlight the multi-cultural character of American literature. Aims: After completing the course students will: - be familiar with the different literary periods, the writers most associated with them, and with the aims of the particular movements or schools of thought - understand the significance of the American literary canon - be able to interpret the texts in their historical and cultural context - be able to evaluate the suitability of the texts for readers of different levels
