Course content
The concept of intensive medicine and organisation of IC departments. Definition, development, direction of intensive medicine. Professional and personal aptitude for activities in intensive medicine workplaces. Extended life support. Procedures for extended cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the use of specific procedures with aids and devices, including defibrillation of the heart by electrical discharge, possible pharmacotherapy, including the methods of drug administration. Highly specialized nursing care for patients with extended life support. The use of wound healing trends by wet and vacuum methods in the prevention of nosocomial infections. Trauma, polytrauma. Acute conditions in hematooncology, etc. Etiology, clinical state, treatment options, complications. Controlled hypothermia and its use in intensive medicine. The use of medicinal gases and the use of hyperbaric chamber. The application of blood transfusion products and blood derivatives. Treatment of invasive inputs. Conditions requiring artificial ventilation. Invasive and non-invasive artificial pulmonary ventilation (indications, ventilation modes, influencing the respiratory system of artificial ventilation). Complications and side-effects of artificial ventilation. Problem of cessation from the artificial ventilation. Extubation of the patient. Complex highly specialized nursing care for patients with artificial pulmonary ventilation (care for the endotracheal and tracheostomy cannula, cleaning respiratory tract, exhaustion and respiratory rehabilitation, endobronchial lavage). Communication with patient on artificial ventilation. Hygienic care of the patient on artificial ventilation (eye, ear, hair, oral cavity, nose, skin, nails, genitals and other areas). Care for elimination. Sleep care and mental hygiene. Shock conditions and acute intoxication.

Learning outcomes
The course is focused on the provision of highly specialized nursing care in patients requiring intensive state and care monitoring.
Familiarity with the subject and the ability to provide a highly specialized nursing care to a patient requiring intensive monitoring.
Prerequisites
Students will understand the issue of providing highly specialized care in intensive care units.

Student performance

Attendance at lectures and seminars is recommended. Credit: Passing a written test. Exam: Oral exam.
