Gerontology and geriatrics - terminology interpretation, demographic features of ageing, concept of the field of geriatrics, particularities of nursing procedures in geriatric nursing, Nursing process in geriatric patients at risk - decubitus ulcers, falls, injuries, nutrition disturbances, elimination, communication with the patient and his relatives, rehabilitation nursing.

The study discipline provides general information about clinical geriatrics. Students are taught to carry out the nursing process with elderly patients, deal with specific features of old age and specific aspects of old age diseases. An emphasis is put on the specific geriatric patient regimen, physiotherapy, self-sufficiency and independence testing, assessment of functional potential and dealing with patient discharge, or other follow-up care of a geriatric patient.
On completion of the course, students are expected: to be familiar with the conceptual framework of geriatrics and its prognostic meaning; to be familiar with characteristics and specific features of ageing and old age; to be familiar with characteristics of old age diseases; to be familiar with specific features of pharmacotherapy at old age; and be able to carry out the nursing process with geriatric patients with regard to risk factors connected with the characteristic changes of the old age.
