Course content
Main thematic areas: Specifics of brain changes in old age (morphological, biochemical) Cognitive functions and aging; memory and its disorders in older age Cognitive impairment; screening tools for cognitive assessment (MMSE, MoCA, ACE-III?) Dementia, depression, delirium - clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, therapeutic options, symptom identification in deterioration Risk factors for the development of dementia; basic classification of dementias Specialized nursing care for seniors with cognitive decline and dementia, psychosocial interventions Issues of quality of life and dignity in patients with dementia Assessment of self-sufficiency and pain in seniors with dementia Needs of seniors with dementia at different stages of the disease (P-PA-IA structure), behavioral disturbances in seniors with dementia Nutrition and hydration in seniors with advanced dementia Cognitive training for older adults Communication with patients with cognitive impairment and their close relatives

The course is designed as both theoretical and practical. It introduces students to the issue of cognitive changes in old age and the specifics of nursing care for seniors with cognitive impairments.

Continuous completion of tasks assigned by the lecturer during practical sessions. 90% attendance in seminars and exercises required. The credit is awarded upon passing a written test with a minimum score of 75%. The exam is concluded with an oral examination covering the individual thematic areas.
