The course will take place on 13 October 2026 in the Faculty of Arts building at Křížkovského 10, room 2.25 (conference room, 1st floor, back of the building). Lecturers: prof. Alison Steven (UK); prof. Annamaria Bagnasco (IT); prof. Mary Steen, (AU). This workshop takes doctoral students on a journey through the process of obtaining ethical approval for their research projects, developing their understanding of the ethical principles and underpinnings of research, different types of ethical approval, and the operationalisation of research protocols. Programme (9.00 - 17.00) Session 1: Ethical principles & underpinnings (What: The building blocks/basics, covering ethical concepts, and maybe Helsinki declaration etc - including some considerations re AI) Session 2: Types of approval for research & Systems and procedures for gaining approva (When, why and how: approval might be needed, where to get it from, which bodies to consider e.g. NHS bodies, national committees, social care, gatekeepers etc, systems and processes (e,.g. IRAS in UK) Session 3: Living the reality of ethical approval and operationalisation of research protocols Real case study from a research project (Putting research plans as approved into practice, putting ethical practices in place, record keeping, reporting etc) Final considerations/ wrap up
