Course content
Thematic headings: Diseases of the circulatory system - repetition of pathophysiology, heart diseases -ICHS, arrhythmias, hypertension, vascular diseases,Atherosclerosis, phlebitis, aortic diseases. Heart failure. Diseases of the respiratory system - bronchitis and pneumonia, diseases of the pulmonary circulation, bronchial asthma. Diseases of the musculoskeletal system - degenerative and inflammatory joint diseases, bone diseases (osteoporosis). Metabolic diseases - disorders of sugar metabolism ? diabetes ? complications and treatment, diseases of fat metabolism. Obesity and metabolic syndrome. Diseases of the blood and haematopoiesis - anaemia, leukaemia, platelet diseases, bleeding disorders. Endocrine diseases - thyroid diseases, adrenal disorders, stress reaction. Diseases of the digestive system - diseases of the stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas and biliary system. Poisoning and damage by physical phenomena and chemical substances. Immune disorders.

Learning outcomes
The course includes a review of the physiology and pathophysiology of the major body systems, introduces students to the basic symptomatology of the major diseases of each system, and the major methods of examination. A review of treatment options for the major diseases in internal medicine. Major emphasis is given to the circulatory, musculoskeletal and respiratory systems, as well as metabolic diseases.
