During the term, several important Latin writing Dutch authors will be presented. The course has the following lessons: 1. Introduction into Latin literature from the Low Countries 2. Magister Nivardus, Ysengrimus (1148/9) 3. Desiderius Erasmus, Laus Stultitiae (1509) 4. Guillelmus Gnapheus, Acolastus (1529) 5. Janus Secundus, Basia (1541) 6. Hugo Grotius, Mare Liberum (1609) 7. Constantijn Huygens, Otia (1625) 8. Petrus Burmannus Secundus, Poemata (1746) 9. Jacobus Henrik Hoeufft, Pericula Poetica (1783) 10. Petrus Hofman Peerlkamp, Carmina (1843) 11. Johannes van Leeuwen, Fasti Hollandici (1864) 12. Michael Pratensis Oirschotanus, Carmina varia selecta (2nd half 20th century)

In the 16th and 17th century, many Dutch and Flemish scholars wrote literature in Latin, then being the main internatonal language. During the course, the students will make acquaintance with important Latin writing Dutch writers.
After having finished the course, the students will have a fair survey of the most importnat Latin writing Dutch and Flemish authors. |
