Course content
1) The World of Communication. Introduction to the study of communication. 2) Communication and culture. Communication and relationships. Spectrum of communication- intrapersonal to mass commn. 3) Studying Communication. Interdisciplinary nature of the subject. Relevance of communication studies. Academic origin. Practical concerns and academic issues 4) Cornerstones of Communication. Theorizing and modeling. Two schools of communication studies. Question of Culture. Communication as a dynamic process of meaning making. 5) Types and Forms of Communication. Types on the basis of participants, medium etc Forms and structures- Verbal, non-verbal etc. 6) Non-verbal communication- Context of culture. Medium- Strengths and weaknesses . Medium and Messages. 7) Making Meanings: The Semiotic Approach. Signs, symbols and Codes: Basic concepts Signification: Connotation and Denotation. Myths and Metaphors. 8) Theory of verbal communication. 9) Theory of nonverbal communication. 10) The message. (static and dynamic, production and the reception). 11) Cmmunication Competence. Some myths of communication competence. Dimensions of competence.

Dialogic Lecture (Discussion, Dialog, Brainstorming), Activating (Simulations, Games, Dramatization)
Learning outcomes

Students acquire basic knowledge about key terms in the study of social communication.
Prerequisites
The course introduces students to intellectual tools for critical assessment of images, messages, practices, media institutions and technologies making up our informationdense and time-urgent world.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Essay

Final credit test. Write research paper on chosen topic. Exam: Final test.
