Course content
1. European structuralism - F. de Saussure and his importance 2. Division of language system, basic linguistic disciplines 3. Interdisciplinary character of contemporary linguistics 4. Language functions 5. Language principles and origin 6. Genealogical and typological language classification 7. Stratification of Czech national language 8. Theory of formal (correct) language 9. Dynamics of contemporary Czech language situation - basic development tendencies 10. Language culture, language politics, language education. Influence of mass media on Czech language development and on attitude of people using Czech language. 11. Czech language in European language context 12. Glottal stop, norm, codification. Normative language manuals. Language advices of Institute of Czech language of Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic 13. Czech National Corpus

Learning outcomes
Goal of this subject is to introduce the students basic issues of language and prepare them for further studies of more specialized linguistic problems connected with journalistic profession. Emphasis is put on interdisciplinary character of language study. Special attention is paid to Czech National Corpus which serves as a prompt source of information about Czech language in everyday journalistic work.
Completion of the course will strengthen the competencies acquired during secondaryschool studies, prepare participants for studying specialised linguistic disciplinesparticularly the courses Contemporary Czech Language for Journalists (SCJBN) and Stylistics for Journalists (STBN) and enable them to navigate new interdisciplinary linguistic fields.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of language and the linguistic system at uppersecondary (grammarschool) level is expected from students (e.g., Hlavsa, Z. et al., Český jazyk pro I.-IV. ročník SŠ, SPN, Prague 1997, or another equivalent textbook), or the completion of such knowledge through selfstudy.

Credit requirements: 1. 75% active participation in seminars. 2. Preparation of a presentation text and highquality delivery of the presentation. 3. Successful completion of the credit test. 4. In written form: submission of partial seminar tasks and the presentation text, uploaded with the required header to the appropriate folder in Moodle.
