Course content
1. Communication theory as "independent" scientific discipline, scientific communication research: interdisciplinarity; 2. Basic concepts of communication studies (social interaction, communication ) vs. mediated communication; typology of social communication; 3. Communication as process: the basic components of the communication process: the submitter, the receiver, media, communication channel, code; 4. General system theory and information theory, and their contribution to the study of communication, transmission models of communication; 5. Semiotics and communication: the communication features: production, structure, types and their properties, semiotic models of communication; 6. Linguistics and communication: study of verbal communication, signs and meanings; Jacobson communication model; 7. The issue of non-verbal communication vs. verbal nonverbal communication, mixed communication, theory of non-verbal communication; 8. Rhetorical approach to communication: exploring the possibilities of public and institutional communication; 9. Specifics of mass media communication, communication theory, and selected models for the study of mass media communication; 10. Media and Culture: cultural background look at the process of communication; 11. Intercultural Communication (ethnography of communication, speech codes theory); 12. Changes in communications development, periodization of the development issues of human communication;

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce students the principal methods of communication scientific research. Students will be familiarized with the varieties of communication studies in selected scientific disciplines (semiotics, linguistics, sociology, psychology, etc.). Selected communication models will be introduced too. The course is designed as the first fundamental insight that paves the way to other following courses, obligatory (Theory of Communication 2) and optional, where the issue of communication will be further developed in various aspects. The communication will be introduced in generally terms in various concepts and contexts.
Students will acquire skills of the course according to sylabus. Acquistion of basic terms from the Communication Theory field.

Credit requirements: - Regular active participation in seminar - preparation for seminars (given knowledge of the texts) - successful completion of final test Examination Requirements: - an essay on an assigned topic (5 pages) and its defense; - Knowledge of topics discussed in lectures
