1. Introductory session, course requirements 2. Traditional vs. (?) new media, media epistemology 3. Radical media constructionism, simulation, simulacra, hyperreality, pseudo-events 4. Media systems 5. News discourse (analysis of media messages, news value theory, gatekeeper theory). 6. Analysis of news discourse (selection of events for news coverage) 7. Learning outcomes
|
The course builds on the Media Studies I. course and further develops and thematizes the issues outlined therein. It aims to describe the basic characteristics of the media as a socio-cultural phenomenon, the individual segments and levels of the media communication process and the possibilities of their systematic research, which is interpreted from different theoretical and analytical positions. Emphasis is placed on the interconnection of MS with other disciplines dealing with the same subject (interdisciplinarity). The final part of the course is devoted to the current key topics addressed by MS.
- Ability of critical analysis of advanced academic literature in Czech and English - Demonstration their understanding of contemporary academic literature on the topics discussed in the class - acquitance with the contemporary themes in cultural/medial studies - awareness of existing knowledge of cultural diversity, approached from pluralistic perspective - ability to discuss on cultural, media and societal topics related to the Media studies

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam, Student performance
Active participation on seminars, cooperation on collectively realised research, final report writting, final knowledge test. Exam: An oral exam on topics covered in Media Studies I and Media Studies II.
