1. F. de Saussure and his contribution to linguistics 2. Division of language system, basic linguistic disciplines 3. Interdisciplinary character of present linguistics 4. Language functions 5. Language principles and its origin 6. Genealogical and typological language classification 7. Stratification of Czech national language 8. Theory of formal (correct) language 9. Dynamics of contemporary Czech language situation - basic development tendencies 10. Language culture, language politics, language education, influence of mass media on Czech language development and on attitude of people using Czech language 11. Czech language in European language context 12. Glottal stop, norm, codification. Normative language manuals. Language advices of Institute of Czech language of Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic 13. Czech National Corpus

Learning outcomes
Goal of this subject is to introduce the students basic issues of language and prepare them for the following studies of more specialized linguistic problems connected with journalistic profession. Emphasis is put on interdisciplinary character of language study. Special attention is paid to Czech National Corpus which serves as a prompt source of information about Czech language in everyday journalistic work, formal language questions, language culture, language politics and language education.
Preparation for further studies of specialized linguistic disciplines, orientation in changes of language norm
