Course content
1. Editing of the text, basic concepts and procedures (the role of the editor, compsition, editing of the text, layout, proof readings, etc.). The editorial work and hierarchy of editing(the editor-in-chief, editor). 2. Specific position of the editor in the editorial department (coordination of the cooperation of individual members of the office at the preparation of the newspapers, editorial meetings, discussions about the topics, editorial plan). 3. Editing of the newspaper articles (compositions of the articles, various techniques of editing, stylistic and grammar proof reading) 4. Editorial options and ways of veryfing of information sources. Editing of texts in the pressed timed conditions ?time deadlines and editorial closing date. 5. The differences in editing of different kind of newspapers articles. The articulation of differences, the real examples. 6. How to prepare headlines, headline complexes, subtitles and other kinds of titles in various kinds of newspapers articles. How to work with quotations and paraphrases. The limits of the author´s interpretations. Cliché and stereotypes, etc. 8. Topical groups; the way of choosing a topic and its arrangement. The work with various kinds of articles within one group. 9. Different approaches to editating the text in media (different types and different orientation) ? field editors (regional daily, nationwide daily, tabloid, internet journal, investigative weekly, etc.); 10. Mock preparation of newspaper page: the agenda setting, layout, the pecking order of articles at one page, layout contra inhalt. 11. Ethical aspects of editor´s work. Professional journalistic standards. Laws and regulations.

Learning outcomes
The course provides a deeper insight into editorial practice of contemporary Czech print media. Students get familiar with the practical organisation of the work in the newsroom and the role of the editor in it. Students get acquiatanced the knowledge about the editing, graphical arrangement of page, proofreadings. The focus will be particularly on real texts and their headlines (the previous knowledge of rules of creation of journalistic texts is expected). Students will edit agency news so that to be able to understand different approach to editing of journalistic texts as well as different kind of work in various media editorial offices. Educational excursions are planned as a part of the course - students get familiar with basic procedures of their work. Students also learn how to proof the relevance of information sources. Critical reflection of published articles in pring will be part of the course too. Attention will be also devoted to ethical aspects of editor´s work.

Prerequisites
Ability to create own journalistic texts. Orientation within the Czech media system.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam

Student gets credits for: - active participation in lessons. - Student must demonstrate practical ability to edit different types of texts and explain the process of production. Colloquium: - examination of the information gained during the course
