Learning outcomes
|
This course continues the topic of the previous course and it focuses on other important films of the Ukrainian cinematography. Again we shall deal with films based on a literary work or reflecting specific periods of the history of Ukraine. In the lecture we shall discuss the circumstances of the film production and a wider cultural and literary context. We shall analyze the following films: Taras Bulba, Bohdan Zinovij Chmelnyckyj, Zaliznja sotnja, Kajdaševa simja, Kaminnyj chrest, Oranžová láska and others. It is also useful to read some of the literary works which were filmed, especially when dealing with an important novel (I. Franko, V. Stefanyk, I. Nečuj-Levickyj).
Students will get familiar with the fundamental Ukrainian films and consequently with history and realia of Ukraine. An outline of the activities of Dovzhenko Films and the international collaboration of Ukraine and other countries in film production.

Prerequisites

Lower intermediate level of Ukrainian or Russian language. Students do not have to have attended the course Ukrainian Film 1.
