Course content
1-2. Culture and literature during the reforms of Peter I and in the 18th century 3-4. Russian literature, culture, and thought in the first half of the 19th century 5-6. Russian literature, culture, and thought in the second half of the 19th century and in pre-revolutionary Russia 7-9. Russian (Soviet) literature, culture, and thought from 1917 to Stalin's death 10-13. Russian (Soviet) literature, culture, and thought from the "Thaw" to Perestroika

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce students to a representative overview of Russian cultural development from the era of Peter the Great's reforms through to the end of the 20th century, with a particular focus on Russian and, later, Soviet literature of the 19th and 20th centuries. The focus will not be limited to literary texts (including classic works of Russian and Soviet literature), but will also encompass the development of Russian thought, taking into account the intercultural exchange of ideas between Russia and Western Europe.
Students will gain a basic overview of Russian literature, culture, and thought in Russia during the 18th-20th centuries, and will be able to analyze the works they have read in terms of historical context, literary movements, and conceptual frameworks of the time.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of the major periods in the culture of Central and Eastern Europe from the 19th to the 21st century, and a basic understanding of the historical context of Russian history.

Assessment methods and criteria
Analysis of Creative works (Music, Pictorial,Literary), Written exam

Attendance at lectures, active participation in discussions, and reading of required literature and selected texts from literary works.
