1. Basic Concepts and Periodization 2. The Russian Empire and the Habsburg Empire at the Beginning of the 20th Century 3. World War I and the Collapse of the "Old Regime" 4. The Russian Revolutions 5. The Interwar Era. Totalitarianism 6. World War II, the Holocaust, and Their Place in Today's Historical Memory 8. Occupation and the Emergence of Satellite States. The Formation of the Soviet Bloc 9. Dissent in the USSR and Other States of the Soviet Bloc 1. 10. Dissent in the USSR and other Soviet bloc states 2. 11. The path to freedom: the collapse of the USSR and the Soviet bloc 12. Countries of the former Soviet bloc at the end of the 20th century: main problems, fundamental trends.

Learning outcomes
|
The lectures focus on the issues of the 20th century that continue to shape Central and Eastern Europe to this day. The histories of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, and the Baltic states are understood as the histories of a multiethnic and multicultural region, fundamentally shaped by the Soviet and Nazi regimes. Great emphasis is placed on emancipation movements and the struggle for freedom and human rights.
Student will understand the main issues in the modern history of Central and Eastern Europe.

Prerequisites
|
Knowledge of 20th-century world history at the high school level a basic understanding of the region's earlier history.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Written exam, Student performance
Active participation in class (maximum of two absences per semester) Completion of ongoing assignments Successful completion of a written test (answers to open-ended questions). The test may be taken only three times. The written test is in Czech.
