Course content
|
1. Consulting process. Definition of the counselling professions. Kinds of counselling. Goals of the counselling process. Phases of the counselling process. Role of a client in the counselling process, role of the counsellor in the counselling process. 2. Consulting relationship. Building consulting relationship. Barriers of creating an effective consulting relationship. Maintaining consulting relationship. Closing consulting relationship. 3. Role of the counsellor in the counselling process. Counsellor as a protector. Counsellor as a partner. Options and limits of the counsellor´s role of a protector and options and limits of the counsellor´s role of a partner. Other possible roles that can be undertaken by the counsellor in the process. 4. Role of a client in the counselling process. Client as a parent, client as a partner, client as a child. Dealing with a client as a parent, or as a child in the consulting process. 5. Transaction analysis. Basic premises of transaction analysis. Analysis of the structures, analysis of the transactions, analysis of the games. Options and limits of transaction analysis in the consulting process. 6. Communication. Definition of communication as a specific form of interaction. Effective communication, barriers of effective communication. Verbal communication, non-verbal communication, paralinguistic communication. Types of questions in communication. Options and limits of open and close questions, options and limits of direct and non-direct questions. 7. Techniques of active listening. Overview and usage of the techniques of active listening in an interview in regard of counselling process. 8. Training the techniques of active listening. Using the techniques of active listening in situations which are models of real counselling relationship. Identification of active listening barriers. Identification of facilitating factors in case of using the techniques of active listening. 9. Working with a client in a difficult situation. Definition of the term difficult situation. Client´s share of creating and maintaining the difficult situation, counsellor´s share of creating and maintaining the difficult situation in the counselling process. Possible ways of transforming the difficult situation into a non- difficult situation. Reverberations of the difficult situations. 10. Types of problematic situations. Definition of usual problematic situations within the counselling process in regard of client´s activities. Adequate strategies chosen by the counsellor for particular client´s activities. 11. Strategies of acting in counselling interaction. Assertiveness as an effective option against forcing and passively orientated strategies. Overview of the techniques of assertiveness in the counselling process. 12. Training the techniques of assertiveness. Using the assertiveness techniques in situations which are models of real counselling process.

Learning outcomes
|
The course should structure selected processes of interpersonal interaction, namely the processes of communication and help, and thus lead to discovering rules; knowledge of them is a necessary presupposition of possible intentional interventions in the said processes. The barriers to communication and help as well as possible ways of their elimination will be outlined. The course includes not only lectures but also training (direct social learning included) and following discussion.
Student: - Defines individual phases of counselling process. - Names the barriers of effective communication. - Explains the limits of using individual assertiveness techniques. Student: - Can enter actively into social interaction and can support its positive features. - Can reduce stress factors in his/her working environment. - Can eliminate or dampen social conflicts. Student is capable to enter into human interaction in which he/she is able to use adaptive strategies of action.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam
To gain the colloquium it is necessary to present a case study and to be active during team work. Colloquium has a form of a group discussion - in groups of five students - on the topics of counselling.
