Course content
|
1. Communication. Definition of communication as a specific form of interaction. Effective communication, barriers of effective communication. Verbal communication, non-verbal communication, paralinguistic communication. Types of questions used in communication. Options and limits of open and close questions, options and limits of direct and indirect questions. 2. Prosocial behaviour, cooperative actions. Classification of individual interaction processes which are communication, prosocial actions, aggressive actions and assertive actions. The focus is on the prosocial actions and cooperation. Clarifying the principles of the development, process, and possible influence to the named interaction processes. 3. Aggressive actions. Definition of the term aggression, aggressive, aggressive actions. Clarifying the causes of the development and duration of aggressive actions. Possible interventions leading to a relief or elimination of aggressive actions of a social work client. Handling own aggression. 4. Assertive actions. Assertive actions as a form of interaction, active way to enforce own individual interests which does not contain aggressive signs. It is an activity when dos not have hurting character. Assertive actions have two forms: competitive actions and open (non-manipulative) actions. Showing the main assertive techniques. 5. Training assertive actions. Using assertive techniques in situations which are models of a real counselling relationship. 6. Transaction analysis. Basic premises of transaction analysis. Analysis of a structure, analysis of transactions, analysis of games. Options and limits of using transaction analysis in the counselling process. 7. Using transaction analysis in the social work practice. Using the transaction analysis principles in the process of identifying mistakes which develop in real communication. Using this knowledge to optimize the process of communication. 8. Counselling process. Definition of counselling professions. Kinds of counselling. Goals of the counselling process. Phases of the counselling process. Position of a client in the counselling process, position of a counsellor in the counselling process. 9. Counselling relationship. Building a counselling relationship. The main ways to build a counselling relationship. Barriers of an effective counselling relationship. Maintaining and strengthening of counselling relationship. Terminating a counselling relationship. 10. Techniques of active listening. Overview and using the active listening techniques in an interview, with focus on a counselling interview. 11. Training the techniques of active listening. Using techniques of active listening in situations which are models of a real counselling relationship. Identification of the barriers of active listening. Identification of the facilitating factors in case of using the techniques of active listening. 12. Counsellor´s failures which lower the efficiency of the counselling process. Identification of the main mistakes which we can see in the counsellor in the helping process. Clarifying the essence of the development and duration of the mistakes. Recommendations how to eliminate the mistakes and enforcing the effectivity of the counselling process.

Learning outcomes
|
The course should structure selected processes of interpersonal interaction, namely the processes of communication and help, and thus lead to discovering rules; knowledge of them is a necessary presupposition of possible intentional interventions in the said processes. The barriers to communication and help as well as possible ways of their elimination will be outlined. The course includes not only lectures but also training (direct social learning included) and following discussion.
student defines individual phases of the counselling process; student names barriers of effective communication; student explains the limits of individual assertive techniques. student can act actively in the social interaction and can support it positive features; student can reduce stress factors in own workplace; student can eliminate the development and the process of social conflicts. student is eligible to enter human interaction in which he/she is able to use adaptive strategies of acting.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam
The credit is gained when there is a presentation of own cases which are connected with dealing with a client in a problematic situation. Another condition is to attend actively the teamwork in tutorials. Colloquium has a form of a group discussion on the topics form the lecturers, there are five students in the groups.
