Learning outcomes
The course aims at developing the understanding of media images of Japanese culture and society. The students will gain the understanding of how popular culture and media - particularly cinema - have shaped the perceptions and expectations of what Japanese society and culture is or should be. We will focus on the stereotypes that are associated with Japanese national and cultural identity, but also on those features of Japanese society and culture that are presented as typical or specific. The classes consist of screening selected movies, of introductory lectures on the main topics of these movies, and of discussions. At the end of the course students will be able to define stereotypes and sepcific features connected to image of Japanese culture and society in selected movies; explain the stereotypes and specific features in relation to broader social and cultural conditions; interpret the processes of creating stereotypical images of Japan in media, particularly in cinematography; analyze the main elements of the image of Japanese culture and society in selected movies; formulate critical approach toward the stereotypical images of Japan in popular culture.
