Course content
1. The Origin of Spanish Jews: Jewish Legends of the Antiquity of the Jewish Diaspora in the Iberian Peninsula. The Jewish Diaspora in the Western Mediterranean. 2. Jews in Roman Hispania. Epigraphic Information. Judaism and Christianity in Spain. The Council of Elvira. 3. Jews in the Visigothic Kingdom of Toledo. Anti-Jewish Legislation and Its Causes. The Problem of Converts. Jewish Messianic Expectations (Julian of Toledo). 4. Jews in Muslim Al-Andalus. Jews and the Muslim Conquest. Major Jewish Communities of Muslim Spain. Role of Jews in the Courts of Muslim Rulers. Samuel ibn Nagrella. 5. Jews in the Christian Kingdoms of Spain in the 11th-13th Centuries. Jews during the Reconquista. 6. The Beginnings of Anti-Jewish Movements in the 14th Century. From the pogrom of 1391 to the expulsion. The Exodus in 1492 and the phenomenon of conversion. 7. The Inquisition, Jews and converts. 8. Jews in early modern Spain: "crypto-Jews", judaizantes, marranos, limpieza de sangre and Spanish society. 9. Jewish life in Sephardi. Jews in Christian society. Aljama - internal organization, institutions. Internal conflicts. 10. Sephardic culture and art: synagogues, manuscripts, etc. 11. Sephardic literature and philosophy. 12. Sephardic Jews from the exodus to the present day (Mediterranean, Latin America, etc.)

Learning outcomes
An overview of the history of the Jewish people in what is now Spain, from the arrival of the first Jewish communities to the expulsion of the Jews in 1492 and the subsequent fate of Sephardic Jews. A separate section is dedicated to Jewish philosophy, literature and art.
The student will acquire comprehensive knowledge and skills in the field of history, culture and social status of Jews on the Iberian Peninsula. In addition to specialist knowledge of the topic, the student will also acquire specialist skills such as source analysis, comparison, interpretation of cultural phenomena, critical thinking and general competencies such as historical awareness, intercultural understanding and the ability to work independently.
