Course content
The course surveys literary trends within their historical and cultural context, covering the period from the Generation of 1898 (Unamuno, Azorín, Baroja, Valle-Inclán, Maeztu, Machado), Modernism in Spanish literature, the Generation of 1914 (Novísimos, Ortega y Gasset, Pérez de Ayala), points of contact between the Spanish and European avant-garde, the Generation of '27, literature of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), and pre-war drama (Lorca, Casona, Aub). It further introduces postwar generations (Tremendismo, Realismo social), literature of exile, new trends in theatre (theatre of the absurd, collective creation), the post-dictatorship period (Transición, Generación Nocilla), and contemporary literary movements (metafiction, autofiction, microrrelato, etc.). The lecture is complemented by a seminar, whose main activity is the guided reading of excerpts from works in the original language and the analysis of key works based on assigned readings in the form of reports and presentations. Students are guided toward developing comparative literature skills and the ability to distinguish and characterize the most important developmental stages of Spanish literature and its dominant aesthetic expressions.

Learning outcomes
It is supposed previous passing of another literary seminars of the second block. Generation of '98 and their most significant representatives: Unamuno Azorín, Baroja, Maeztu, Generation of so-called sons and grandsons of that generation(Ortega y Gasset), Modernism in Spanish literature, Generation of '27 and their avant-garde poetry, literature of the civil war 1936-39, drama( Lorca, Casona a Maxem Aub) and contemporary poetry and drama. The lecture is accompanied with the seminar in which original texts are read and commented and the most important books are analyzed according to the recommended literature.

Continuation of the course of 19th century Spanish literature

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

Presentation, reading 150 pages of scholarly text in Spanish and 600 pages of fiction in Spanish, and participation in classes.
