Course content
Course content in blocks: Renaissance, the transition from the Middle Ages: Poetry of G. de la Vega; theatre of Torres Naharro and Gil Vicente. Picaresque novel and other variants. The so-called Second Renaissance: F. de Herrera, Fray Luis de León, ascetic-mystical literature. Baroque poetry, Culteranismo and Conceptismo: Góngora, Quevedo. Drama and its developmental stages: Lope de Vega and his school; Cervantes and dramatic works. Miguel de Cervantes and his novels. Characteristics of High Baroque works: Pedro Calderón de la Barca; analysis of his works; key elements of the play Life is a Dream (La vida es sue?o). First chronicles from the colonization of the American continent: Historical and socio-cultural context; definition of the genre; Cristóbal Colón, Bartolomé de Las Casas, Hernán Cortés, Bernal Díaz del Castillo. The first Latin American writer: El Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. Latin American Baroque: Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce the cultural and literary context of the 16th-17th centuries, to cover the development of drama, novels, and poetry during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, including the specifics of the ascetic-mystical school in Spain. The course focuses on the literary analysis of texts by the leading representatives of culteranismo, conceptismo, and Baroque theatre. Students will also become familiar with the reflection of the Renaissance and Baroque in the Spanish colonies in the Americas and with the beginnings of the formation of the Latin American literary tradition.
The aim of the course is to gain knowledge of the studied literary works within the historical, social, and cultural context of their time.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of Spanish; the course is taught in Spanish.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

Regular attendance and active participation in lectures and seminars. Preparation for each class, including knowledge of the analyzed text. Written exam
