Learning outcomes
Spanish-speaking territories, and other territories where Spanish was spoken, are scattered across the continents and oceans of the planet. The study of geography is essential and fundamental to understanding the cultures and evolution of Spanish throughout history, as well as its cultural manifestations. Using a constructivist approach, this course aims to introduce students of Hispanic philology to a broad understanding of the geography, landscapes, and cultures of those places related to the Spanish language, both past and present. It focuses primarily on Spain (the Iberian Peninsula, the Canary Islands, and the Balearic Islands), Latin America, Spanish Africa (North Africa and Equatorial Guinea), Spanish Caribbean (Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic), and the Pacific (the Philippines, the Caroline Islands, Guam, and the Pacific expeditions between the 16th and 18th centuries).
