Course content
1) Concept of text, discourse, context; disciplines that deal with discourse analysis 2) Cohesion and coherence and their mechanisms, discourse markers, functional sentence perspective 3) Interpersonal relations in discourse: actor image, negative and positive politeness and its expression 4) Expression of subjectivity in discourse: modality 5) Theory of speech acts, implicit meanings and their interpretation, Grice's principle of cooperation, conversational implicatures, relevance theory

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide an introduction to text linguistics and pragmatics and to familiarize students with basic concepts such as text, context, coherence, macrostructure/microstructure, discourse markers, the understanding of which is crucial for translators. Attention is paid to the application of theoretical knowledge to real texts from the field of professional translation, while students are motivated to be able to analyze errors in defective translations caused by the inappropriate use of cohesive devices, connectors, word order, etc.
The student will gain the ability to transform translation from a mere conversion of words into a logically and pragmatically functional text that corresponds to the norms of the target language and culture.

Final written exam, presentation of stylistic analysis of selected Spanish texts, reading excerpts from the compulsory reading of approximately 200 pages, participation in classes
