Course content
Brazil's independence (1822) - establishment of the empire, Pedro I, formation of Brazilian identity Brazilian Empire (19th century) - Pedro II, society, economy, and culture Slavery and its abolition (1888) - social changes, the status of Afro-Brazilians, cultural impacts The establishment of the Republic (1889) - political transformation, regional elites, modernization of society Migration and multicultural society - European, Japanese, and Middle Eastern migration, cultural influences Cultural formation of the nation (early 20th century) - modernism, the search for Brazilian identity, literature and art The Getúlio Vargas era (1930-1945) - nationalism, cultural policy, media and popular culture Urbanization and mass culture (20th century) - urban development, music (samba, bossa nova), film, and media Military dictatorship (1964-1985) - censorship, cultural resistance, music, and art as forms of protest Contemporary Brazil - democratization, globalization, contemporary culture, film, literature, music

Learning outcomes
The course introduces students to the main features of Brazil's social and cultural development from independence to the present day.
Students will deepen their knowledge of Brazil's historical and cultural development since the early 19th century, acquired in the bachelor's program.
Prerequisites
The course is taught in Portuguese. Students are expected to be able to understand extended discourse in Portuguese.
