Learning outcomes
|
The course is focused on explanatory models implicitly or otherwise assumed by more or less every linguistic theory. Students will learn about major existing explanatory models and how far they can go both in long-established theories (structural linguistics, generative grammar etc.) and in modern theories (quantitative linguistics etc.); the goal is to equip students with fundamental skills needed to build an explanatory rather than merely descriptive model to support a linguistic theory. The topics covered in the course include: overview of explanatory models, explanatory models used linguistics, functional explanation, criticism of explanatory models used in synergistic linguistics.

No prerequisite courses The course is open for students of any year (the contents can be tailored to the needs/abilities of enrolled students) Students are expected to be able to read English-written materials

(1) regular class attendance (80%) (2) regular homework / reading assignments (3) presentation (4) one-to-one discussion of a selected text (students are expected to be knowledgeable in selected topics and know the extended/recommended literature)
