Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the history of modern popular music (or jazz-influenced popular music) especially of the first half of the 20th century.
The student will be able to navigate the main periods in the history of jazz, characterize their basic stylistic features, and place them within their respective historical, social, and cultural contexts. The student will be able to identify and characterize key figures, musical practices, and institutions of individual periods and explain the connections between developments in jazz and the broader evolution of popular music in the twentieth century. The student will also gain a basic understanding of the development of jazz outside the United States, particularly in European socialist countries.

Prerequisites
|
A general overview of the history of music, as well as basic knowledge of the cultural history of the twentieth century is expected.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Mark, Written exam, Seminar Work
Mandatory attendance of at least 75% of classes and active participation in class.
