Leoš Janáček's operas: plans, versions, forms (Kopecký) 4. Seminar discussion with Assoc. Prof. Jiří Zahrádka on an assigned topic 5. Janáček's opera The Makropulos Case as an example of the so-called "Literaturoper" (Křupková) 6. Seminar discussion with Assoc. Prof. Křupková on an assigned topic 7. Janáček's operas in Ostrava: a director's perspective (J. Nekvasil) 8. Janáček's operas in Brno: Osuda dramaturg's perspective (P. Částková) 9. Seminar discussion with Jiří Zahrádka; the genesis of Janáček's operas, directorial approaches 10. Seminar discussion with J. This seminar, which combines lectures with discussions on assigned topics, will explore the interpretive tradition of the operas by the famous Czech composer Leoš Janáček. Students will become familiar with Janáček's operatic works, which attract the attention of a wide range of audiences. They will gain an understanding of the composer's contribution to modern European opera and will learn about the history and current state of stage productions of his works in the Czech Republic (at the country's major theaters) and abroad. Faculty members from the theater studies and musicology departments in Olomouc and Brno contribute to the course. The guest of honor and the proverbial "icing on the cake" of one of the seminar sessions will be director Jiří Nekvasil, who will present his production of "Jenůfa" and the opera "The Fate."
Students will become familiar with Janáček's operatic works, which attract the attention of a wide range of audiences. They will gain an understanding of the composer's contribution to modern European opera and will learn about the history and current state of stage productions of his works in the Czech Republic (at the country's major theaters) and, where applicable, abroad. |

Student performance, Seminar Work
We expect students to possess basic academic skills: an interest in the course material, an active participation in class discussions, and independent preparation. Students must attend at least 75% of the seminar sessions (they may be absent twice; a third absence must be documented with a relevant certificate). The seminar will conclude with a short knowledge test. |
